B Supreme Event Wrap Up by Bgirl Angel, Flozaic Crew, London UK

April 27th, 2009 by asia

sdc110071B supreme, London April 2009 by Bgirl Angel, Flozaic Crew, London

Hi peeps, just a quick update about what happened in London on April 10th, 11th and 12th. First of all, I would like to say that Asia 1, Nika, Sun Sun and others supported Holly and Judy with this event two years ago. This was the 3rd edition and the event has totally grown and attracted some of the finest B-girls worldwide.

b.supreme is an all female in Hip Hop event. There are performances, battles, showcases including female Mc’s and beat boxers. To me, this last edition was the best so far. Only you Asia1 were missing…So let me get started with my tale I have to tell you about B. supreme.

Everything kicked off on Thursday the 9th at the b.supreme pre party in a South London club called “Plan B”. B-boys and B-girls were breaking hard with DJ Renegade spinning the tunes. Some battles were happening as well. And in honour of B Supreme, 2 out of the 3 judges were B-girls! The cyphers were dope after the battles myself and B-girl Flava Roc started of a circle and showed B-girls can hold there own and create just as much hype as the B-boys.

Let’s move on to day 1 of B Supreme. On Friday 10th, I did not go to be honest, but I heard there was a good performance by some B-girls from New York. Also they had a few others performances by the Nike girl street dance crew called Dare 2 dance, and some upcoming B-girls from London called Stylinquance, who are trained by B-girl Sun Sun from Flowzaic B-girl crew. You better watch out!

Now, things got heated on day 2. On Saturday the 11th, the Bonnie and Clyde battle went on. For the 1st time in the B supreme history, since before men were not part of the competition.

It was held in the royal festival hall where you normally have orchestras and opera singers perform, this helps to break down barriers as hip hop normally gets bad press. It was free to get in and B-boys, B-girls, youths, rich and poor could watch.

I have to tell you Asia, that this time the battles were not on a stage as opposed to the previous years. They were on the floor which created a better battle feel. The crowd made a huge cipher and battles happened in the middle. They also had big screens on the walls for people to see the battles as well as the B-boys and B-girls names.
Kimberly Jay and Charlie were hosting, and the atmosphere was hot.
There were b-girls from all around the globe and some crazy matches like =

BBOY Mouse 9( UK ) & BGIRL AT ( FINLAND)
BBOY ? & BGIRL Aruna (BOTH from Netherland)
BBOY Joni & BGIRL Movie 1 (SPAIN)
BBOY Diz & BGIRL ROXY ( BOTH from UK)
BBOY K & BGIRL Sun Sun (from Uk)
BBOY ? & Anna from Sweden
BBOY Cosmic (UK) & BGIRL Dany (Italy)
BBOY ? & BGIRL Pons ( Austria)
BBOY ED & BGIRL EMMA (Scotland)
And many more…….

Before the battles started, it was nice to see all the other b-girls who had come over, like my girl DORA from Hungary, Nadia from Russia, Taya from Finland, Haylstorm from Wales, Daniella from Italy, Anna from Sweden and others. Everyone was jamming and watching the battles. The judges were B-girl Candy from NYC, Rokafella, and an upcoming B-girl from New York. All together, there were 16 pairs. Can you imagine? That was hot. The 1st battle was 1 round per dancer and the other battles were 2 rounds each. In the end, Movie 1 and a B-boy Joni from Finland won. It is funny because, this dude had no partner 24 hours before the battle and asked me and Flava Roc to battle with him. He found Movie 1 and they won.
They did a great job and won the 1st Bony and Clyde at B Supreme I would say they won through consistence, nice flow and not crashing.

Last, but not least, day 3 on April 12th. The host was also Kimberley Jay and Charlie who is a local UK host. This is the day I battled in a 2 on 2 with my girl Flava Roc
from Toulouse in France. On that day, the 2 on 2 B-girl battle happened before a crazy B-girl battle (countries vs countries). In this 2 vs 2. There were 8 teams all together. The juges were Bgirl Sun Sun (UK), Rokafella ( USA), and Aruna ( NETHERLANDS).

The pairs were=

Myself BGIRL ANGEL & BGIRL FLAVA ROC
BGIRL TAYA & BGIRL AT
BGIRL MOVIE 1 & BGIRL NADIA
BGIRL DANY & JESSICOLOGY
2 BGIRLS FROM BIRMINGHAM
BGIRL HAYLSTORM & HER DAUGHTER
2 UPCOMING YOUNG BGIRLS

Names were put in a hat, and guess what? The 1st battle was me and Flava rock vs Taya & AT. This was a really good battle. I loved it because you battle against opponents who get the best out of you. They are good B-girls and everyone thought it was a really good battle. Most people in the crowd had never seen a battle they were stunned. It is the kind of battle when you think, “Damn! Why does it have to be my first battle?” just because, you know you are going to have to go hard right away.
You can also read the same thing on the opponents face. All of us did well and it was very intense. We all did our routines and in the end it was really tight. I though it should have been the final maybe! Taya and AT ended up winning this battle. The whole 2 on 2 was won by Movie 1 and Nadia from Russia. Watch out for this crazy girl from Russia. Her crew is top 9 and she is on their level already. This 2 on 2 showed me that the best battles are when you really challenge yourself, not just the easy ones when you don’t take any risks because you know you don’t need to.
There was a break before the crew battles! All the B-girls were jamming before this and warming up again. I had a good exchange with DORA from Hungary, who I battled 2 years ago in a crazy one on one. I have to tell you, for those who don’t know Dora. She is a real power head. As we were dancing, she said to me “Our battle 2 years ago was the hardest in my whole life”. That was nice to hear from a rival, it shows you can be positive to your competitors and still battle hard.
However, we had to let the battle BEGIN! The judges were the CROWD this time.
This was the battle I had the most fun and I must say, that was just DOPE! DOPE to compete against “la crème de la crème”!

The crews were=
UK CREW=
BGIRL Angel, BGIRL Sun Sun, BGIRL Genesis, BGIRL Candice, BGIRL Dany

USA CREW=
Candy, Rokafella, Another B-girl (Sorry can’t remember her name but I know she is BETA from ground Zero’s friend), 2 of Rokafella’s students (I think?)

EUROPE CREW=
Movie one, TAYA, NADIA, DORA, ARUNA
The first battle was USA vs Europe. That was really interesting as everyone was really good and there was a really positive vibe.
The 2nd battle was USA vs UK. It was an amazing battle, but unfortunately my words can tell you all the vibe. My friend Flava roc was bursting to battle with us but she was not allowed as the teams were set in advance.
In both these battles, the USA girls were dope and one tiny small black girl did a crazy backspin in a white T-SHIRT and tiny skinny jeans. The longest backspin I have ever seen. Candy did some dope footwork and floor works etc…..

Finally, when Europe battled the UK, all the B-girls present in the event were allowed to join either team. To me, it was the craziest battle. B-girl AT and B-girl Pons (from Austria) joined the Europe crew, and Haylstorm, Flava Roc joined UK With some other local B-girls. It would have been crazy to judge this battle. It went on for ever and it was nice to battle AT and Taya again after the 2 on 2. When the battle was over, I still went in after Dora and then AT came in after me. The host had to stop the battle as we just wanted to carry on. CRAZY! The crowd went made.

This event inspired B-boys who came to watch for ONCE, but also B-girls, kids, parents, tourists and anybody from the crowd, even my boyfriend ( who is not a B-boy)
I am more motivated than ever now, and am looking forward to next b.supreme.
Only you were missing Asia! It is nice when you come and host the event because you understand all of us as a B-girls. As for me, my next stop is Portugal for the Eurobattle where I will be against other bgirls in a 2 on 2. Will tell you all what happened!
Hope you enjoyed it Peeps!
Peace

FIFTY8 GALLERY presents
B-Line B-Boy Drawings and Sculpture
by Carlos Mare139 Rodriguez
58 Coles St. Jersey City, NJ. Friday May 1, 2009 7-11pm

Jersey City, NJ. May 1, 2009- “The B-Boy is the physical Graffiti artist, he is the lyrical and kinetic scratch, he is the break beat manifest, the most modern of all dancers.” Fifty8 Gallery presents B-Line B-Boy Drawings and Sculpture the anticipated solo exhibition of renown sculptor, painter, Carlos Mare139 Rodriguez. Inspired by his childhood era connection to the B-Boy culture this unique series of works are a study in capturing the dynamic movement of the ‘break’ dancer in what he calls ‘linear still frames’. Mare139 provokes us to consider through his simplification of shapes and gestures what gravity defying kinetics are involved in the dance form.

Fascinated as a youth with close association to well known B-Boy crews, he learned the art from the insiders perspective and well understood the text and physical nature of B-Boying by being present at countless ‘jams’ or ‘battles’. Correlating the dance to the abstracted letter forms of graffiti was shared among his circle of influence, several whom were also graffiti artists, among them Doze Green.

Internationally exhibited and collected his graffiti sculpture works are among the most important and innovative of the post NYC subway graffiti movement. His most recent showing is currently in the Grand Palis in Paris for the exhibition Tag au Graffiti. Mare139 has also designed the 2005 and 2007 Red Bull Beat Battle Awards, The B-Boy SPY Award for the Rock Steady Crew as well as the Annual BET Award (Black Entertainment Television).

58 Gallery is easily accessible from NYC by Path. Enter the PATH train at 33rd, 23rd, 14th, 9th, Christopher St. or from World Trade Center in Manhattan and exit after two stops at Grove Street in Jersey City. From there it is a short walk up Newark Ave. to Coles St. where you make a right and find the gallery.

Pagan jam was dope!

April 20th, 2009 by asia

Ahh easter, that strange holiday that made a pagan ritual of observance of spring equinox into a chocolate bunny. As I take a bite out of mine (thanks Ma!) I think about pagan tradition of the sacred circle, dance, music, and tribe vibez. Well this is why we have Bboy/Bgirl jams on days like this. See we are the last lineage of these pagans. Only we don’t drink eachothers blood! Okay let’s get to biz. Jam was way the f out in Costa Mesa aka rich asian playground. When I get breaded I’m def goin back! Haha! Brings me to my next point, if it weren’t for my asian folks would we even have a Bboy scene in Cali? Shout mofo out!! Personally (ha!) I feel that the reason a lot of asians are attracted to Bboyin is because culturally asians are brought up to be quiet (no talkn while eatn that rice) and subdued. So this Bboyn shit let’s them uncover who they really want to be. And I’m all for that! If your Asian reading this and u think I’m wrong you know where you can go. So point made, lots of asians in the house, matter o fact we took a lil headcount while juding a boring battle and realized that there were no white folks at the jam. Cool! Haha! Me and Flo-jitsu and Nasty Ray were judging. We had a ball, battles were dope for the most part and we stayed busy during the wak ones having burner graf battles which i won hands down sorry Ray! Honorable mention to:
Suicide Kingz Squads 1 and 2
Docious Invadorz (Space Invadorz and Squishy Docious Crew)
Squishy Docious Crew
Non Stop Bboys
Footwork Fanatix
Misguided Calamities
The Militia or Blood Hungry Animal Madness (Bham Tribe). The semis were the dopest thought, battle bwtn. Docious Invaders and Footwork Fanatix!!!! Whhhooaaaa!! Man not for nuthn I have not seen kids like these two standouts, Squishy and Ray Roc, that have got me this open in a minute! Mad innovative look and style creativity and serious battle skillz. Look the f*%$# out to all is my advice. They made Moy, Lil Jon and Steelo put in work. For real Moy went crazy, and Lil Jon took his style past the outer limits, feel me? Steelo, well he is a pro at this and he had to work! That really was the final in alls minds eye. Final was way more subdued betwn Nonstop crew and Footwork Fanatix. Footwork took it hands down. Yo but let’s not forget the Poppers and Lockers at the jam, they def got their love! Shoutouts to winner of the Poppin battle, the nastiest Japanese gangsta chick I seen put it down in a minute! Shoutouts Mr. Green who got licked but put it down. I’m not gonna mention the Locker part cuz it sucked. They was either not listenin to the music or not “Locking”. DJ Megatron was on the ones and twos and I grabbed his playlist but i ?ed some of the tracks used for battles sigh… me and Flo both agreed that we would have said, “Hell no, we won’t go” but we old and jaded so take that for what it’s worth. So it was a “dye-free” easter and no eggs were harmed in the making of this jam! )) Thanks to Bboys Anonymous for throwing it!
