Freedom of Beats tonite! LA!

February 24th, 2010 by asia

Hip-Hop will never die, so what that it isn’t tearin up the charts right now.. Our day will never be done, this culture is still in its infancy compared to jazz, we have only just begun. Brothers will always want to rap, walls will continued to be defiled, deejays will rock on w/o vinyl if need be… and bboys n bgirls will remain spinning to their hearts content. An american phenomenon that has infected the world, win, loose or draw.. The cards will continued to be reshuffled and dealt to the new generation.

But we could do more to support the real and not just the TV element.
So come out tonite, and kick back as some veterans of Hip-Hop give you a dose of freedom from formated music in ya ear! DJ Revolution holds court here, and BattleCat and Crazy Toones will be on the decks tonite. I have seen n heard BattleCat rip apart some classic bboy breaks! n I though he only dealt in G music… no restrictions, just make sure to rsvp, this is still guest list only!

WHOLETRAIN FILM + SOUNDTRACK! FREE SCREENINGS!

February 23rd, 2010 by asia

The press is in on this one, and the verdict is…Winner! I can’t wait to check out Wholetrain. Hip-Hop is a rich culture filled with ethos, code of ethics, lineage and creed. Wholetrain’s storyline alludes to these aspects.
Charlie Ahern and Henry Chalfant are our Siskel and Ebert of Graffiti films, and they give it the spray finger up! So get some cans and a fatcap, do a throwup and go see this flick, director Florian Gaag, (Aero One) will be in the house! Oh and cop the soundtack too, for bangfactor!

View WHOLETRAIN trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JVFpaUsIN0

“Florian Gaag has an excellent movie out. I am really proud to be part of that project. WHOLETRAIN is the dopest graffiti movie ever. I would put WHOLETRAIN next to the great movies, right up next to ‘Style Wars’… WHOLETRAIN really captured Hip Hop’s culture.” KRS ONE

With his fantastic cinema debut WHOLETRAIN Florian Gaag tells the story of a crew of four “writers” – David, Tino, Elyas and Achim – who observe the hierarchies, the values, the rules and the codes of the graffiti scene. Night after night they make off for the subway stations of the city, intent on leaving opulent images behind. But as another crew appears on the scene, and the four feel challenged, a creative battle ensues, one that will change the lives of these young people for ever. We are confronted with life taken to the limit. Constantly on the edge of legality. Always on the run from the law. Urban space must be reclaimed. Friends are made and lost. Unbridled creativity and doing things for the sheer love of it are watchwords too.

WHOLETRAIN is an exciting and emotionally gripping drama, one that explores for the first time the secret universe of the graffiti scene. The protagonists exist in a breathless state, suspended somewhere between two worlds: their day to day life, and their existence within the crew. Florian Gaag manages to recount a tale colored by tension and aggression. The result is a many-sided portrait of characters whose world has never been documented in this way before. Their subculture remains authentic and realistic. Edgy editing and grandiloquent camerawork, a pulsating soundtrack and an excellent ensemble of actors, make WHOLETRAIN a film experience not to be missed.

Florian Gaag collaborated with internationally renowned graffiti artists. Writers such as NEON, WON, CEMNOZ, PURE and CIEL, who were responsible for the artwork in the film.
The WHOLETRAIN Soundtrack to be released on June, 2010 was produced by Florian Gaag aka AERO ONE who worked with legendary figures like Hip Hop greats KRS-One, O.C., Planet Asia, Afu-Ra, Grand Agent, Tame One, Akrobatik, REEF the Lost Cauze, Roger Rekless and El Da Sensei.

“I saw WHOLETRAIN at S.O.B.’s in NYC. It was a great experience watching it. There was a tremendous amount of character development, interesting dialogue and a lot of story in it. It took real vision to make that world come alive like that. WHOLETRAIN is an impressive piece of work. It´s the only Graffiti-Movie that can follow in the footsteps of Wild Style. – CHARLIE AHEARN, Wild Style

WHOLETRAIN shows the human dimensions of Graffiti-Writing. The social conflicts of the protagonists are fascinating and allow you to take a look at the writers´real lives. Real characters, real problems.
WHOLETRAIN is a very good film that not only reflects writing culture but also leaves room to authentically portray the writers´ social reality.”
- HENRY CHALFANT (Subway Art, Style Wars)

“I loved the movie…WHOLETRAIN represented the scene the best – ever. It really captured what writers go through and their struggles; they were humanized, they weren’t caricatures. I appreciate that. I remember that it made me feel that I was there with those guys, living with those guys. It took me back to a time when I was living the way those kids were living. I thought it was very authentic in that sense.” – KET

PRESS

“A gripping drama with an outstanding cast. The most authentic German movie in a long time.” – ROLLING STONE

“The film is as fast as a speeding subway train.” DIE WELT

“This film simply hits you in the face, and you can’t get it out of your eyes, your ears, and your senses.” – ULYSSES

“A febrile movie. A moving drama and homage to youth.” – SÜDDEUTSCHE ZEITUNG

“Florian Gaag has shot a small film about sprayers and made a huge portrait on the Ninjas of this subculture. An excellent cinematic debut.” – SPIEGEL ONLINE

“Even the minor roles were well cast in a film that managed to convince in every detail, great fun indeed.” – TAZ

“A grandiloquent love affair with the graffiti scene.” “A wild and uncompromising film.” “These characters are so real, real like we hardly ever see them in the cinema.” “A phenomenal debut.” EPD FILM

“Exact, sensitive and without cliches.” – BERLINER ZEITUNG

“A furious debut film, one that adapts the aesthetic of graffiti in a clever way and knows just how to capture it in cinematic terms.” ” Wholetrain, with its exact symbiosis of staccato editing, hiphop sound design and racy plot, remains one of the best films of the year.” – FILM-DIENST

Urban “Hieroglyphics 3″ LA Art Exhibit!

February 18th, 2010 by asia

Egyptians and Mayans may have been the first to use hieroglyphics, but in Hip-Hop we call it Graffiti, using abstract breakdown of letters, to create our cultures art. Leave it to 2 dope brothas and a cadillac, Mark 7 and Cre 8, “Soul King Legends” to bring us an art exhibit, discussion, and live painting with all artists being of African descent. It’s a celebration of Blackness in Graffiti, and like a can of flat black, it’s a must! In Hip-Hop we all gather round the circle and let the magic unfold, and knowing Cre8, who is also a dancer by nature, this event is bound to have something for everyone in Hip-Hop! Oh… and all you artsy fartsy artwalk types are also invited. wink wink…

Inglewood, CA 90305

An infectious grin, funky enuff like ya grandpa’s draws, a down-by-law dancer, who needs no introduction, Greg Campbellock Jr, member of The Lockers, the first street dance group to achieve fame, has passed on.

Our dance commUnity is morning our loss. Whether a Locker, Bboy/Bgirl, Popper, Freestyle, House Head.. We are all one, he is us, and we are him. If it wasn’t for Don Campellock, Greg Campbellock Jr, Fred Berry, Shabba Doo, Toni Basil, Slim the Robot, and Fluky Luke, we wouldn’t be here, as street dancers. The Lockers paved the way for what we do, and to this day their legacy of dance is untouchable.

I had the pleasure to enjoy Greg’s company throughout the years, at various jams, and felt like kin to him. Though he was a Bad Ass mofo, he remained humble and generally enjoyed the company of dancers far and wide who could learn from him, always giving his best for everyone.

Let us come together, through this great loss, and fellowship, showing strength in numbers, ready to build on what this great man did, and make him proud of what we make of it!

Tuesday: Feb. 16, 2010 Memorial for Greg Campbellock Jr.

Dumplings for Everyone! Chinese New Year Rituals in Your Life!

February 12th, 2010 by asia

Okay dudes, over 3 billion people can’t be wrong, and since im only 1/2, i barely count…hahah! Hapa pride! Actually more than that considering more than just Han descent Chinese folks celebrate Chinese New Year, including Koreans, Tibetans, Mongolians, Vietnamese, Thai, Malaysian, and virtually every country that houses some ethnic Chinese peeps.

Seeped in tea infused tradition, Chinese New Year or Chu Xi, as it translates to “Year-pass Eve”, is a 15 day (u heard right!) celebration, of which 7 days are legal holidays, encompassing special foods, and red decorative characters that symbolize significant attributes that we desire in the coming Year of the Tiger (ROAR).

In a country and culture where emotions are not readily displayed, Chu Xi is a time that families separated, due to work necessity, can come together and share some prosperity and cheer. This is the time of the largest human migration, when migrant workers in China and overseas travel to be reunited with their families on Chinese New Year’s Eve.

I’ll even let you in on a lil secret, since yall love some Bruce Lee, fried rice n eggrolls, orange chicken (some Chimerican food) lets get a lil deeper historically speaking..
As the elders say, a long long long time ago, there was this beast called Nian, who was ferocious and would devour livestock, crops and villages, anything to quell his appetite. Nian would come every new years day and wreck havic like a semi-automatic. Folks use to put a plate of food on their doorstep to keep him from coming inside and eating them. Legend has it that Nian was frightened by a young child who was wearing red, so people began hanging red lanterns, decorations, and painting their doors red to keep Nian away, even lightening fire works to scare him.

Chinese New Year actually marks the arrival of the spring in China, usually around Feb.4th, but it varies every year, as the Chinese calendar differs from the Gregorian.

Here are some cool aspects of the Chinese New Year that you can add to your rituals and customs, making it special for everyone!

New Years dinner is a big festivity, whole fish should be served to represent a surplus amount. Uncut noodles to symbolize longevity, and dumpling, or Jiaozi that represent wealth, also Buddha’s feast veggie dish with Gingko nuts, lotus seeds, bamboo, and black fungus that signifies the earth or root. Going to visit relatives and friends decked out in red, bringing them dried fruits and nuts and cakes, giving children “li” little red envelops with crisp dollar bills in them, bangin some firecrackers, lion and dragon drum dance, to chase away evil spirits, are all great ways of celebrating the New Year!

Feb.14, marks the Chinese New Year of the Metal Tiger
The year of the Tiger is traditionally associated with massive changes and social upheaval. Therefore, 2010 is very likely to be a volatile one both on the world scene, as well as on a personal level. But dont trip.. read your personal scope to see what is in store for ya!

The Rat
For those born in the Year of the Rat, year 2010 promises to be an average year for you, while you may suffer from melancholy from time to time, the positioning of the planets in 2010 will benefit the rats and they will most definitely be more self-confident, and be more innovative than before. Excellent news for the lonely rats, year 2010 promises a great love life for you. You will definitely find a lover within the year, and for the ones that are blissfully married, the year will be filled with romantic joy. Time to rejoice in the warmth of love, rats!

The Ox
You should be aware of some conflicts that might happen in the coming year, particularly with the dragons and horses. To avoid these conflicts, remember to keep an open mind and to not judge others without any basis. This year is a good year for you to learn a new language, so, if you have always wanted to pick up a new language before traveling, 2010 would definitely be the best year. Career-wise, those born in the year of the Ox should be aware that in 2010, your working attitude will be slightly lackadaisical and without much buoyed enthusiasm, put in effort to change the attitude.

Studying in the upcoming year will bring you a considerable amount of success. While you might find yourself getting into some minor conflicts, it is essential for you to stay positive. Your ability to stay positive will lead to a happier and more successful year ahead. It might also be a rocky year ahead for you if you are in a relationship, remember, stay positive and lend a listening ear and you will stay happy.

The Snake

While it is important to have dreams, try to keep a level-headed mind for the upcoming year or you might end up straying away from reality. Once you’ve kept a level-headed mind, you will find yourself in favorable opportunities in your career, make sure you grab them!

The Horse
Good news for the horses! Year 2010 might be one of the smoothest years for you. You will find bonds between your friends and relatives being built fairly easily. Keep a clear head when making decisions for you will find that plenty of decisions may sound familiar to one another but with very different outcomes. You may also tend to overfeed yourself in the upcoming year so be sure to keep on a healthy diet and exercise regularly.

The Goat
Those born in the year of the Goat will find plenty of wealth opportunities coming their way in 2010. You may end up passing up on a lot of them and making several bad decisions early on in the trimester but it is crucial for you to stay positive and not be disheartened by your losses for more opportunities will be coming for you later in the year. Stay on your feet, be in the company of your loved ones and develop more personal relationships and you will find that the upcoming year might just be your best year yet.

The Monkey
It is essential for the monkey to not be overly emotional in 2010. You will find that not everything will go your way initially. While you might lose some close friends, you have to maintain mental stability to save the broken pieces of the relationship. However, 2010 will provide business opportunities for you. It is the year for you to take risks. Take the risks and you will be rewarded tremendously. Do not rest on your laurels and expect things to happen!

The Rooster
2010 will be a year of competition for those born in the year of the Rooster. In your career, you will face plenty of competition to get up onto a higher rung of the ladder in your company. Adopt a positive and hardworking attitude and 2010 might just be a good year for you.

The Dog
There will be ups and downs for the dog in the year 2010. In your career, your lack of respect towards authority might prove to be a downfall for you. Your quest for independence will lead to you having some problems in your love life as well. It is ultimately crucial for you to tone down your brash attitude to find some good in the upcoming year or 2010 will prove to be a year of loneliness for you. Stay friendly!

The Pig
Known to be sentimental creatures, you have to learn to put off your sentimental ways to find some unexpected successes in your line of work and your love life for 2010. The alignment of the stars will bring you utmost luck for the coming year so expect some monetary windfall coming your way. It is important for you to stay away from carbonated drinks in the upcoming year for you will be vulnerable and open to intestinal and digestive problems. However, besides that, 2010 might prove to be a healthy year ahead for you.
