This is why we Love LA! Lakers!

June 18th, 2010 by asia

Thanks to the Lakers winning the championship, our LA pride cant hide.
If you hate LA then you really dont get it, if you never been here well then you can still come kick it. Lets take a break from the entanglements of technology and reflect on the City of Angels, and the karmatic implications that the name holds..
I love LA. There is so much good energy here. From the sun to the sand, imported palm trees next to native succulents, we come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, dont care about whose “legal”, and call ourselves Caliheads! We are purveyors of good ass burritos and sushi, ghetto and bougie, real and fake louie, swap meet flyness mixed with some beat swap meet records (yes some of us do still buy vinyl, call us cra-cra). Some Snoop, Dam funk to Flying Lotus, Mr. French, big azz raves to daytime do-over, house music lovers to mariachi mexican circus.. We crown this town regal in purple and gold. Talk shit about the Lakers and your ass gone get drove..outside city limits but u gots to drive real far. Cuz LA’s so big, all you can see is the stars.
So lets talk about what we really love about LA:
- The weather is pure bliss, always
- The weed, is pure bliss, always
- Always something to do somewhere
- Cool art scene
- Hot girls and some fine dudes
- Dope whips
- Crenshaw
- Venice Beach
- Echo Park
- Chinatown (and San Gabriel Valley)
- Griffith Park
- Endless museums and cultural happenings
- Always some cool lil spot goin on
- Cool Bboy/Bgirl scene
- Creative theatre, music, entertainment scene
-Elote, tamales, tamarindo, dulce de leche, and all things Mexican
-Official Thai food blurry but good at 3am
-Official Ethiopian food at 3am
-Those pool parties with dope deejays
-Going everywhere else and then coming back home to LA. Heres to you!

Xbox360 Natal Cirque de Soleil show in LA
Lastnite was phenomenal! From the amazing rotating picture box frame with a girl walking on ceiling, upside down. I am still trying to figure out how they did that! Grand production all around XBox and Cirque de soleil for the XBox 360 Natal! from Cirques ability to transform the ambiance with outer planetary characters. The set was amazing! The had us wearing some Nazi like robes that had shoulders that would change color with the lightening. We were like bees drawn to pollen. The game, get to the game already! That Cirque music lulled me to sleep real quick, but not cuz i was not entertained, it was almost to much.. I actually enjoyed it more thinking about it now then i did was i was there. I keep thinkin about all those landfills filled with wiis. All the kids that will be begging they parents to buy them one.. Anyhow, you dont need any of those pesky controls that get lost, or run out of batteries, the machine reads your bodies motion. They had lots of game displays, and techs about what the console has like live video chat. Microsoft will be scoring with the XBox 360 Natal. Kinect.

Detox not Botox!

May 24th, 2010 by asia

Detox Naturally!

We hear a lot about detoxifying… it’s kind of a buzzword really, but do
We know why and how we should detoxify?

Well for starters, toxins surround us in urban environments: the air we breathe (pollution, smoke), water we drink (lead from pipes, chemicals from water sources), and food we eat (pesticides, chemically enhanced). Add the toxic effects of stress (cortisol) and you have a recipe for disaster!

So in essence, detoxification is basically a cleansing routine to reduce the body’s toxic load. Instead of calling Tyrone to deal with all this toxic baggage we have a better approach to healing and riding our bodies of excess built up toxins.

If you have complaints such as fatigue that you notice is in excess of what you regularly feel, or skin rashes like eczema, or even excess weight, its your bodies way of saying, “Yo, clean me out!”.

Here is a basic chart that everyone can follow to keep the body clean throughout the year:

Daily use:
- Detox tea I recommend Triple Leaf Tea (A traditional Chinese Medicinal tea blend) has burdock and dandelion to cleanse blood.
-Fiber (adheres to fat and carries it out of colon, lowers cholesterol, bowel health)
-Probiotics (displaces harmful microbes, regulates immunity, enhances digestion)
-Green Foods (Sea moss, spirulina, chlorella all have concentrated nutrients and promote purification and rejuvenation)
-Red Foods (antioxidants, also fights infection and inflammation)
Also, consider an annual fast to really cleanse and eliminate. This site has great information on detoxification on every level: http://www.womentowomen.com/detoxification/naturalbodydetoxification.aspx

2 Fly Mommas and a Cadillac!

May 9th, 2010 by asia

In honor of our celebrated Mother, I chose to write about something personal.. 2 Fly Mommas from Hip-Hop that are changing the game of social activism from ‘keeping it real’ to ‘making shit right’! And yes, only I would be so brash as to write about myself!

A little back story may be in order to you can really see what’s going on, and who the playas are:

1. East Coast representative J-Love Calderon www.jlovecalderon.com

2. West Coast representative Asia One www.asia-1.org www.noeasyprops.tv

J-Love is my best friend since age 2, growing up in Denver, Colorado, we were inseparable, whether we were roller skating on Saturdays or having gigantic house parties at my mom’s crib when she was out of town. J was not going to be a regular white girl. She always identified more with Black culture, and Hip-Hop, and was the first female I knew of in Denver to start “getting-up” on the walls with her infamous ‘Act-One” tag. While I was an awkward and shy mixed kid, J-Love fit in with all crowds. While I loved middle school, and the motley assortment of Michael Jackson, Prince and Apollonia, and Led Zeppelin influenced heads, once high school started and the gang life of Bloods and Crips saturated our world, I opted out while J got down. From that point on we began our different paths, mine as a Bgirl and hers as a social activist fighting to end white privilege. We both used Hip-Hop as a tool for growth, whether it was with Zulu Nation, where we learned about the Nation of Islam and the 5 percent nation, eating clean food and why not to eat pork, knowledge of self, Egyptology, diversity, and respect for all peoples, Behold the Pale White Horse and Alien life.

I became one of the most famous Bgirls of the mid 90’s, got down with Rock Steady Crew, and became an outspoken advocate for Hip-Hop culture and spokesperson for Bboys and Bgirls worldwide. J-Love graduate from San Diego State, went on the get her masters in New York, and became a social worker, and later a case worker and educator at El Puente High School in Williamsburg Brooklyn. We both worked on the event I created with the help of Jlove and Easy Rock, and the Universal Zulu Nation of San Diego, called the Bboy Summit. It was our tribute to the skills of Hip-Hop, the disciplines and disciples. To honor the Bboys and Bgirls, the original rockers of Hip-Hop. Jlove went on to author her first book, “That White Girl”, starting the nonprofit entitled “We Got Issues” and to create curriculum for educators that teaches tools of empowerment to people of color, “Till the White Day is Done”. While J-Love cruises thru the college circuit, motivating young people and lecturing on the concept of white privilege, and crusading for truth, justice and freedom, I tour around the globe representing my company and motto, “No Easy Props”; directing my after school program “Hip-Hop 101″, breaking, writing graffiti, teaching workshops, and producing events. We meet up periodically to get our dose of each other, make our kids do crazy stuff to entertain us, and to laugh, love, and create together.

Our desire to change the world and give our street wise, Hip-Hop peoples, the best products on earth, rather than the nasty stuff always market to us on some low level vibe tip, compelled us to create a line of state of the art, jungle friendly, conscious, energy related products that complete our mind, body and soul. For us by us!

Just the facts:
1. What ur doing now to change the game?

JL: What I am up to now is books and the publishing business; and producing TV and Film. That White Girl, the movie focuses on a white girl coming the age while grappling with race, graffiti, Hip-Hop, and gangs; and moving on some incredible TV projects (top secret for now), and my multi-media project ‘Till the White Day is Done, in which the first initiative, LOVE, RACE, and LIBERATION curriculum guide (co-edited by myself and Marcella Runell Hall) drops this Women’s Herstory Month. It is a guide for educators and activists to use in discussing the tough issues of race and white privilege in America.

Asia: Turned my for profit into a nonprofit called No Easy Props Productions that houses my after school program for youth called “Hip-Hop 101” where we teach multiculturalism, self-identity, physical education through Bboy/Bgirl dance, and art education through making graffiti inspired street wear; and the international annual event est. 1994, called “The B-Boy Summit”. I am also working on a TV show about Bboys and Bgirls, and a line of energy botanical teas for the Hip-Hop community with my BFF.

2. Your life’s purpose?

JL: My life’s purpose is dedicated to Truth, Love, and Freedom. I commit myself to building healthy tribe, creating community, righting wrongs, and loving completely.

Asia: To build a sustainable healthy Hip-Hop community, educated, empowered, and charged with the vitality of life to change the world with.

3. Who u roll with?

JL: My crews roll deep and wide. I am down with the Hip-Hop community and progressive activist community worldwide; TV and Film projects with my partners Johnny Sanchez, Heidi Miami, M1, MC Serch, Marla Teyolia, Byron Hurt Kamilah Forbes; and my best friend and business partner launching our new Hip-Hop Tea line is none other than the amazing Asia-One.

Asia: No Easy Props is my motto and movement! Zulu Kings and Kweens is who I rep with in the circles worldwide massive. The children of the world are all of my seeds, and I roll with the youth!

4. Why folks should follow you?

JL: My goal is bridging social justice with commercially viable people, products and experiences. I would love to expand my community with like-minded, creative women leaders who care deeply about peace and social justice, as well as creating innovative, artistic projects that show the world the depth and breath of women’s’ power and potential.
Asia: In order to demand more out of life, we must give of ourselves, each one doing our part collectively as a CommUnity. No more self-serving ego agendas. We want change and we are the change we want to see!

Well there you have it, 2 different phenomenal mamas, from different coasts, ambitious idealists that see the world thru the lens of Hip-Hop but are taking different pictures to create their story.

LAAPFF Special 70th Birthday Tribute to Icon Bruce Lee!! April 30-May 2!!

April 24th, 2010 by asia

Thank you Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival for presenting this special 70th!! Bday Tribute to Bruce Lee! Special Screenings, celebrity guests, and family members will commermorate Bruce’s life and legacy. 4/30-5/2 (See schedule below)
___________________________________________________________________

Bruce Lee mania came about in the early 70′s when there was a strong anti-Chinese sentiment in the US due in part to the Vietnam War, and the Chinese aid support and fighting alongside Vietnamese.

He took the Hong Kong Style of martial arts movies that were popular to a new level, and was responsible for the major surge of interest in marital arts in the West in the 1970s.

A true student of philosophy, Bruce’s allegiance to the original form of Wing Chun, changed as he adopted a mixed medium approach by adding strengths from a variety of martial arts to form his un-orthodox method he called, Jeet Kune Do, or “The Way of the Intercepting Fist”.

A true visionary and be yonder, he refused to be constrained by rigid Chinese beliefs, such as the rule of not teaching non-Chinese martial arts. Bruce himself, taught by the legendary Wing Chun master Yip-Man, was eventually alienated from further teaching due to his part non-Chinese ancestry (his mother was 1/2 German). Bruce’s Chinese name was Lee Jun Fan, in Cantonese translated to “return again”; as his mother believed he would return to the US from China. Very auspicious indeed!

Bruce spent his early years in the US training and entering martial arts competitions, and his interest in acting was overshadowed by his passion for martial arts. His lightening speed, and martial arts feats couldn’t help but attract TV producers’ interests and he landed supporting roles as Kato in “The Green Hornet”, and also in several episodes of “Batman”. When Bruce’s acting career didn’t take off in the US, due to fears in Hollywood about having an Asian playing a staring role, and how or if that would translate into box office sales, he went back to China and hit it big with director Raymond Chow, staring in “The Big Boss, “Fist of Fury”, and “Way of the Dragon”. These films were box office hits in Hong Kong with Chinese Nationalism themes always present. Due to the undeniable success of these movies, Warner Bro’s finally came knocking with an offer to star in “Enter the Dragon”, which became a box office hit. Tradgically Bruce passed away, under mysterious circumstances only a few days before the film was to be released, and also before the completion of “The Game of Death”, that Bruce wrote, and began shooting and directing, before his untimely passage.

A true trailblazer on the health frontier Bruce believed in the benefits of juicing, vitamins and supplements, and protein drinks, that he concocted himself. He also believed in rigorous training consisting of intense cardio session, weights and reps, flexibility and serious abs workouts, emphasizing the importance of core strength.
Bruce was no stranger to variety, and he spent a great deal of time cultivating his knowledge and perfecting his form and mind, advocating that technique is not what is important, but the combination of spirituality and physique, which are the backbone of Jeet Kune Do. His fights as well as physical features are legendary, and still unsurpassed, giving him the title of “superhuman” such as:

Lee’s striking speed from three feet with his hands down by his side reached five hundredths of a second. [82]
Lee’s combat movements were at times too fast to be captured on film for clear slow motion replay using the traditional 24 frames per second of that era, so many scenes were shot in 32 frames per second for better clarity. [84][85][86]
In a speed demonstration, Lee could snatch a dime off a person’s open palm before they could close it, and leave a penny behind. [87]
Lee would hold an elevated v-sit position for 30 minutes or longer. [79]
Lee could throw grains of rice up into the air and then catch them in mid-flight using chopsticks. [88]
Lee could thrust his fingers through unopened cans of Coca-Cola. (This was when soft drinks cans were made of steel much thicker than today’s aluminum cans). [86]
Lee performed one-hand push-ups using only the thumb and index finger. [80][88][89]
Lee performed 50 reps of one-arm chin-ups. [90]
Lee could break wooden boards 6 inches (15 cm) thick. [91]
Lee could cause a 200-lb (90.72 kg) bag to fly towards and thump the ceiling with a sidekick. [80]
In a move that has been dubbed “Dragon Flag”, Lee could perform leg lifts with only his shoulder blades resting on the edge of a bench and suspend his legs and torso horizontal midair. [93]

We will forever love you Bruce Lee, as the one and only who made the world recognize Chinese martial arts, and you as the truth!
